'Oh, Heaven knows,' said Steerforth. 'Anything you like - or nothing! I told you she took everything, herself included, to a grindstone, and sharpened it. She is an edge-tool, and requires great care in dealing with. She is always dangerous. Good night!' ¡¡¡¡'Good night!' said I, 'my dear Steerforth! I shall be gone before you wake in the morning. Good night!' ¡¡¡¡He was unwilling to let me go; and stood, holding me out, with a hand on each of my shoulders,
oil paintingas he had done in my own room. 'Daisy,' he said, with a smile - 'for though that's not the name your godfathers and godmothers gave you, it's the name I like best to call you by - and I wish, I wish, I wish, you could give it to me!' ¡¡¡¡'Why so I can, if I choose,' said I. 'Daisy, if anything should ever separate us, you must think of me at my best, old boy. Come! Let us make that bargain. Think of me at my best, if circumstances should ever part us!' ¡¡¡¡'You have no best to me, Steerforth,' said I, 'and no worst. You are always equally loved, and cherished in my heart.'

It was a night tide; and soon after we went to bed, Mr. Peggotty and Ham went out to fish. I felt very brave at being left alone in the solitary house, the protector of Em'ly and Mrs. Gummidge, and only wished that a lion or a serpent, or any ill-disposed monster, would make an attack upon us, that I might destroy him, and cover myself with glory. But as nothing of the sort happened to be walking about on Yarmouth flats that night, I provided the best substitute I could by dreaming of dragons until morning. ¡¡¡¡With morning came Peggotty; who called to me, as usual, under my window as if Mr. Barkis the carrier had been from first to last a dream too. After breakfast she took me to her own home, and a beautiful little home it was. Of all the moveables in it,
oil paintingI must have been impressed by a certain old bureau of some dark wood in the parlour (the tile-floored kitchen was the general sitting-room), with a retreating top which opened, let down, and became a desk, within which was a large quarto edition of Foxe's Book of Martyrs. This precious volume, of which I do not recollect one word, I immediately discovered and immediately applied myself to; and I never visited

Under way, and with nothing for the time being to do, I turned my attention to the situation of the boats. The Macedonia's third weather boat was being attacked by two. of ours, the fourth by our remaining three; and the fifth, turn about, was taking a hand in the defense of its nearest mate. The fight had opened at long distance, and the rifles were cracking steadily. A quick, snappy sea was being kicked up by the wind, a condition which prevented fine shooting; and now and again, as we drew closer, we could see the bullets zip-zipping from wave to wave. ¡¡¡¡The boat we were pursuing had squared away and was running before the wind to escape us, and, in the course of its flight, to take part in repulsing our general boat attack. ¡¡¡¡Attending to sheets and tacks now left me little time to see what was taking place, but I happened to be on the poop when Wolf Larsen ordered the two strange sailors forward and into the forecastle, They went sullenly, but they went. He next ordered Miss Brewster below, and smiled at the instant horror that leapt into her eyes.

By the time they reached home she was contrite and spiritless. She was Mrs Angel Clare, indeed, but had she any moral right to the name? Was she not more truly Mrs Alexander d'Urberville? Could intensity of love justify what might be considered in upright souls as culpable reticence? She knew not what was expected of women in such cases; and she had no counsellor. ¡¡¡¡However, when she found herself alone in her room for a few minutes - the last day this on which she was ever to enter it - she knelt down and prayed. She tried to pray to God, but it was her husband who really had her supplication. Her idolatry of this man was such that she herself almost feared it to be ill-omened. She was conscious of the notion expressed by Friar Laurence: `These violent delights have violent ends.' It might be too desperate for human conditions - too rank, too wild, too deadly. ¡¡¡¡`O my love, my love, why do I love you so!' she whispered there alone; `for she you love is not my real self, but one in my image; the one I might have been!'

Poor little Retty, though by far the lightest weight, was the most troublesome of Clare's burdens. Marian had been like a sack of meal, a dead weight of plumpness under which he had literally staggered. Izz had ridden sensibly and calmly. Retty was a bunch of hysterics. ¡¡¡¡However, he got through with the disquieted creature, deposited her, and returned. Tess could see over the hedge the distant three in a group, standing as he had placed them on the next rising ground. It was now her turn. She was embarrassed to discover that excitement at the proximity of Mr Clare's breath and eyes, which she had contemned in her companions, was intensified in herself; and as if fearful of betraying her secret she pattered with him at the last moment. ¡¡¡¡`I may be able to clim' along the bank perhaps - I can clim' better than they. You must be so tired, Mr Clare!' ¡¡¡¡`No, no, Tess,' said he quickly. And almost before she was aware she was seated in his arms and resting against his shoulder. ¡¡¡¡`Three Leahs to get one Rachel,' he whispered. ¡¡¡¡`They are better women than I,' she replied, magnanimously sticking to her resolve. ¡¡¡¡`Not to me,' said Angel. ¡¡¡¡He saw her grow warm at this; and they went some steps in silence.

shoulders, - "acomfortable hostelry with an unusually talented personnel and staff…. Yes, I have wondered." He looked at Father. "You know how and why?"
"Not yet," saidFather, "but I mean to."
"There are several possibilities," said Mr. Robinson, thoughtfully. "It is likemusic, you know. Only so many notes to the octave, yet one can combine them in – what is it – several million different ways? Amusician told me once that you do not get the same tune twice. Most interesting."
There was a slight buzz on his desk and he picked upthe receiver once more.
"Yes? Yes, you have been very prompt. I am pleasedI see. Oh! Amsterdam, yes…. Ah….Thank you…. Yes. You will spell that? Good."

What is it you really wanted us for, sir?"
"Well –” Sir Ronaldthought a moment, "we're allagreed on the main things," he said slowly. "We're agreed on our main policy, on what we're trying to do. I think it might be profitable to have a look around forsome of the small things, the things that don't matter much, that are just a bit out of the usual run. It's hard to explainwhat I mean, but like the business some years ago in the Culver case. An ink stain. Do youremember? An ink stain round a mouse-hole. Now why on earth should a many empty a bottleof ink into to a mouse-hole? It didn't seem important. It washard to get at the answer. But when we did hit on the answer, it led somewhere. That's – roughly – thesort of thing I was thinking about. Odd things. Don't mindsaying if you come across something that strikes you as a bit out of usual. Petty if youlike, but irritating, because it doesn't quite fit in. I seeFather's nodding his head."

Flattened down in the bushes on the ridge with the strike force were severalEwoks, including Wicket, Paploo, Teebo, and Warwick. The rest stayed lower, behind the knoll, out of sight. Leia put down the scanner and scuttled back to the others. "The entrance is onthe far side of that landing platform. This isn't going to be easy." "Ahrck grah rahr hrowrowhr," Chewbacca agreed. "Oh, come on, Chewie," Han gave the Wookiee a pained look. "We've gotteninto more heavily guarded places than that—" "Frowh rahgh rahrahraff vrawgh gr," Chewie countered with a dismissinggesture. Han thought of a second. "Well, the spice vaults of Gargon, for one." "Of course I'm right—now if I could just remember how I did it…" Hanscratched his head, poking his memory.

Chewbacca barked in agreement, and bolted toward the Millennium Falcon.Close behind him, Leia and Han rushed toward the ship, covering their faces as aswarm of Mynocks flew past them. They reached the Falcon and ran up theplatform into the ship. As soon as they were on board, Chewbacca closed the hatchafter them, careful that none of the Mynocks could slip inside. "Chewie, fire her up!" Han yelled as he and Leia darted through the ship's hold."We're getting out of here!" Chewbacca hurriedly lumbered to his seat in the cockpit, while Han rushed tocheck the scopes on the hold control panel. Leia, running to keep up, warned, "They would spot us long before we could getup to speed." Han didn't seem to hear her. He checked the controls, then turned to rush backto the cockpit. But as he passed her, his comment made it clear, he had heard everyword. "There's no time to discuss this in the committee."
