'Of which my Annie,' said the Doctor, 'never, but for me, could have been the object. Gentlemen, I am old now, as you know; I do not feel, tonight, that I have much to live for. But my life - my Life - upon the truth and honour of the dear lady who has been the subject of this conversation!' ¡¡¡¡I do not think that the best embodiment of chivalry, the realization of the handsomest and most romantic figure ever imagined by painter, could have said this,

with a more impressive and affecting dignity than the plain old Doctor did. ¡¡¡¡'But I am not prepared,' he went on, 'to deny - perhaps I may have been, without knowing it, in some degree prepared to admit - that I may have unwittingly ensnared that lady into an unhappy marriage. I am a man quite unaccustomed to observe; and I cannot but believe that the observation of several people, of different ages and positions, all too plainly tending in one direction (and that so natural), is better than mine.'

Having the natural feelings of a tradesman at finding that a job he should have been called in for had been unskilfully botched by his customers among themselves, he was disposed to say no. Yet the dignity of the girl, the strange tenderness in her voice, combined to affect his nobler impulses - or rather those that he had left in him after ten years of endeavour to graft technical belief on actual scepticism. The man and the ecclesiastic fought within him, and the victory fell to the man. ¡¡¡¡`My dear girl,' he said, `it will be just the same.' ¡¡¡¡`Then will you give him a Christian burial?' she asked quickly. ¡¡¡¡The Vicar felt himself cornered. Hearing of the baby's illness, he had conscientiously gone to the house after nightfall to perform the rite, and, unaware that the refusal to admit him had come from Tess's father and not from Tess, he could not allow the plea of necessity for its irregular administration.

"That's right. Mrs.McCrae."
"Oh yes. Of course. What can I do for you, Mrs.McCrae?"
"Is Canon Pennyfather staying at the hotel still?"
"I'm glad you've rung up," said Miss Gorringe. "We have been rather worried as to what exactly to do."
"Do you mean something'shappened to Canon Pennyfather? Has he had an accident?"
"No, no, nothing of that kind. But we expected himback from Lucerne on Friday or Saturday."
"Eh – that'd be right."
"But he didn't arrive.Well, of course that wasn't really surprising. He had bookedhis room on – booked it, that is, until yesterday. He didn't come back yesterday or send any word and his things are still here. Themajor part of his baggage. We hadn't been quite sure what todo about it. Of course," Miss Gorringe went on hastily, "we know the Canon is, well – somewhat forgetfulsometimes."
"You may well say that!"

The Wookie turned something on the console before him. At the same timeSolo pulled back on a comparatively large lever. Abruptly the long streaks ofDoppler-distorted starlight slowed to hyphen shapes, then finally to familiar bolts offire. A gauge on the console registered zero. Gigantic chunks of glowing stone appeared out of the nothingness, barelyshunted aside by the ship's deflectors. The strain caused the Millennium Falcon tobegin shuddering violently. "What the--?" a thoroughly startled Solo muttered. Next to him, Chewbaccaoffered no comment of his own as he flipped off several controls and activated others.Only the fact that the cautious Solo always emerged from supralight travel with hisdeflectors up—just in case any of many unfriendly folks might be waiting for him—had saved the freighter from instant destruction. Luke fought to keep his balance as he made his way into the cockpit. "What'sgoing on?" "We're back in normal space," Solo informed him, "but we've come out in themiddle of the worst asteroid storm I've ever seen. It's not on any of our charts."He peered hard at several indicators. "According to the galactic atlas, our position iscorrect. Only one thing is missing: Alderaan." "Missing? But—that's crazy!" "I won't argue with you," the Corellian replied grimly, "but look for yourself."He gestured out the port. "I've triple-checked the coordinates, and there's nothingwrong with the nav'puter. We ought to be standing out one planetary diameter fromthe surface. The planet's glow should be filling the cockpit, but—there's nothing outthere. Nothing but debris." He paused. "Judging from the level of wild energyoutside and the amount of solid waste, I'd guess that Alderaan's been blown away.Totally." "Destroyed," Luke whispered, overwhelmed at the specter raised by such anunimaginable disaster. "But—how?"

But to return to Friday, he was so busy about his Father, that I could not find in my Heart to take him off for some time: But after I thought he could leave him a little, I call'd him to me, and he came jumping and laughing, and pleas'd to the highest Extream; then I ask'd him, If he had given his Father any Bread? He shook his Head, and said, None: Ugly Dog eat all up self; so I gave him a Cake of Bread out of a little Pouch I carry'd on Purpose; I also gave him a Dram for himself, but he would not taste it, but carry'd it to his Father: I had in my Pocket also two or three Bunches of my Raisins, so I gave him a Handful of them for his Father. He had no sooner given his Father these Raisins, but I saw him come out of the Boat, and run away, as if he had been bewitch'd, he run at such a Rate; for he was the swiftest Fellow of his Foot that ever I saw; I say, he run at such a Rate, that he was out of Sight, as it were, in an instant; and though I call'd, and hollow'd too, after him, it was all one, away he went, and in a Quarter of an Hour, I saw him come back again, though not so fast as he went; and as he came nearer, I found his Pace was slacker, because he had some thing in his Hand.
When he came up to me, I found he had been quite Home for an Earthen Jugg or Pot to bring his Father some fresh Water, and that he had got two more Cakes, or Loaves of Bread: The Bread he gave me, but the Water he carry'd to his Father: However, as I was very thirsty too, I took a little Sup of it. This Water reviv'd his Father more than all the Rum or Spirits I had given him; for he was just fainting with Thirst.
When his Father had drank, I call'd to him to know if there was any Water left; he said, yes; and I bad him give it to the poor Spaniard, who was in as much Want of it as his Father; and I sent one of the Cakes, that Friday brought, to the Spaniard too, who was indeed very weak, and was reposing himself upon a green Place under the Shade of a free; and whose Limbs were also very stiff, and very much swell'd with the rude Bandage he had been ty'd with. When I saw that upon Friday's coming to him with the Water, he sat up and drank, and took the Bread, and began to eat, I went to him, and gave him a Handful of Raisins; he look'd up in my Face with all the Tokens of Gratitude and Thankfulness, that could appear in any Countenance; but was so weak, notwithstanding he had so exerted himself in the Fight, that he could not stand up upon his Feet; he try'd to do it two or three times, but was really not able, his Ankles were so swell'd and so painful to him; so I bad him sit still, and caused Friday to rub his Ankles, and bathe them with Rum, as he had done his Father's.
